My personal fascination with all things Irish is neither accidental nor random. In fact, there are many parallels between Irish culture and my native Yorùbá heritage. Both peoples share a deep spiritual practice, an ancient wisdom, and a profound connection to their past. However, just as many Irish descendants have lost touch with their roots, the same can be said for many Yorùbá people. Yet, the truth remains—we are ancient people, and there is so much to be grateful for in our shared history.
In this brief reflection, I want to highlight the beauty and intentionality of the Irish language. Like Yorùbá, the Irish language holds profound meaning in its expressions. Words are not carelessly thrown around; they carry weight and significance. This is evident in one of my favorite Irish phrases: Conas atá tú?
The Irish are an ancient people with a rich and deeply rooted heritage. From music and art to the profound legacy left in literature and poetry, the contributions of Irish ancestors to humanity cannot be overstated. It's no accident that Ireland, often referred to as the "Emerald Isle," is also known as the "Land of Saints & Scholars." This remarkable island has nurtured minds and souls, producing a wealth of wisdom that has left an indelible mark on the world.
When an Irish person asks, Conas atá tú?—"How are you?"—it goes beyond a mere formality. In many cultures, this phrase might be used casually, a pleasantry exchanged as people go about their day. But in Irish, the phrase carries a deeper intention. It’s not just a greeting; it’s a genuine inquiry into the state of someone’s well-being. It invites the listener to reflect on their mental, emotional, and even spiritual state.
This is a profound reminder of how language can shape our approach to mental health. Asking someone how they are—truly asking—requires vulnerability, empathy, and attention. It’s not a question you ask in passing or out of obligation. It’s a question that demands time and sincerity. You are meant to wait for the answer, to listen, to care.
As we celebrate September’s Suicide Prevention Month, and approach October’s Mental Health Awareness Month, and November’s Movember campaign for men's mental health, this intentionality feels especially poignant. In a world where so many struggle in silence, a simple, heartfelt question can mean the difference between isolation and connection.
The Irish phrase Conas atá tú? reminds us to check in with one another—genuinely. Mental health is not something to gloss over. Whether it’s through song, conversation, or a quiet moment of listening, we should all strive to ask this question more often, and mean it when we do.
May we be as intentional with our words as the Irish and as connected to our communities as our ancestors intended. Mental health, like language, is a reflection of our humanity. Let’s honor it.
Be well!
